Samoans remains the largest Pacific peoples ethnic group
The 2018 Census recorded a total of 381,642  people from over thirty distinct Pacific groups living in New Zealand. The majority (243,966 people or 64 per cent) lived in Auckland. This is 85,701 more people than was recorded in 2013.
Other Pacific ethnic groups with large populations included:
• Cook Islands Maori – 80,532 people
• Tongan – 82,389 people
• Niuean – 30,867 people

Occupation

For employed people aged 15 years and over identifying with the Samoan ethnic group and living in New Zealand on 5 March 2013:
The most common occupations were: labourers (18.6 percent or 8,295 people), professionals (14.2 percent), and clerical and administrative workers (13.2 percent).

Industry

For employed people aged 15 years and over identifying with the Samoan ethnic group and living in New Zealand on 5 March 2013:
The most common industries worked in were: manufacturing (17.3 percent or 7,788 people), health care and social assistance (9.1 percent), and retail trade (8.7 percent).

Labour force

For people aged 15 years and over identifying with the Samoan ethnic group and living in New Zealand on 5 March 2013: Of the 91,476 people aged 15 years and over, 63.8 percent (58,320 people) were in the labour force.

Employment

For employed people aged 15 years and over identifying with the Samoan ethnic group and living in New Zealand on 5 March 2013:
80.3 percent (39,687 people) were employed full time (30 or more hours per week).
